FORTRESS OF WAR (2010)
Synopsis: Surrender was not an option
Fortress of War (Russian: Брестская крепость; translit. Brestskaia krepost; Festival title: The Brest Fortress) is a 2010 Russian World War Two drama based on real events. The film covers the heroic defence of Brest Fortress against invading Wehrmacht forces in the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II.
When the Nazis invade the Soviet Union in June 1941, the Russian troops begin an epic struggle to hold onto the border stronghold of the Brest Fortress. The siege lasts for nine days, during which time both the soldiers and the ordinary townspeople are forced to face the bloody horrors of war.
The story describes the events of the first days of the defence. Events are narrated from the perspective of 15-year-old Sasha Akimov, centering on three resistance zones holding out against the protracted German siege. The defending forces are led by regiment commander Major Pyotr Gavrilov (44th Rifle Regiment of the Red Army), with Regimental Commissar Yefim Fomin (84th Rifle Regiment of the Red Army), and the head of the 9th Frontier Outpost, Lieutenant Andrey Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov.
This WWII war drama portrays, with incredible accuracy, the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress, which took the first major blow from the Nazis on June 22, 1941.
Russian film with English subtitles.
